Finland’s energy transition takes a major step forward with the announcement of a strategic collaboration between Fotowatio Renewable Ventures (FRV) and AMP Tank Finland Oy. The two companies are teaming up to develop their first joint 60 MWh battery energy storage (BESS) project in Simo, a strategic location in the Lapland region near the Baltic Sea.
The BESS project will be fully operational in 2025
The development of this BESS system began in May 2024 and is expected to be operational during the first quarter of 2025. The facility, located just a few kilometers from the Arctic Circle, will use 26 Sungrow PowerTitan battery packs with lithium ferrophosphate (LFP) cells, a technology that guarantees efficiency and stability.
Furthermore, the proximity of the project to the Fingrid Simojoki substation ensures a reliable connection to the local power grid , which is a positive and beneficial aspect.
It is important to mention that this BESS will stabilise Finland’s growing renewable energy grid and contribute to optimising energy production through an advanced management system. Neal Kumar, Director of AMP Tank Finland Oy, highlighted the relevance of this collaboration for the region, mentioning that the country has an exceptional infrastructure and proactive policies regarding clean energy .
Expansion possibilities
The project, which covers 0.4 hectares, also envisages a possible expansion to 200 MWh in a second phase , which would allow Finland to integrate even more sustainable energy into its electricity mix. Tristán Higuero, Business Development Director at FRV, highlighted his company’s commitment to innovation and sustainability, noting that they hope to develop more similar initiatives across the Nordic region.
