NMIA projects 3.25 MMT of air cargo per year
The initial infrastructure will start with 0.5 MMT annually, progressively scaling up to 3.25 MMT in its final strategic development phase, FedEx reported.
This volume makes Navi Mumbai International Airport one of the most ambitious logistics hubs in South Asia. The expansion reinforces the Mumbai Metropolitan Region as a key air hub for high-value global trade.
Equipped with advanced automated sorting systems, dimensional scanning, high-speed screening technology, and dedicated aircraft parking facilities
2.5 billion investment in automation
FedEx will commit more than Rs. 2.5 billion over the long term to develop a 300,000-square-foot facility.
The center will integrate automated sorting to optimize transit times. The infrastructure will allow simultaneous processing of inbound and outbound cargo, improving predictability and operational efficiency.
NMIA, being in close proximity to one of the country’s busiest container ports, Jawaharlal Nehru Port, has earmarked 29 hectares of land for cargo infrastructure, 10 dedicated cargo berths and a fully automated cargo terminal with the capacity to eventually handle over 3 million metric tons of cargo per year.
Thus increasing capacity in India’s largest international trade corridor and strengthening its role as an integrated trade and logistics gateway for western India.
India-Europe-US strategic connection.
The hub will connect western India with Southeast Asia, West Asia, Europe and the United States through an integrated air network.
The facility, to be developed in partnership with Adani Airport Holdings Ltd (AAHL), will be designed as a regional consolidation and redistribution hub supporting trade flows in Southeast Asia and West Asia, Europe and the United States, integrating global network connectivity directly within India’s main trade corridor, FedEx reported.
6,000 jobs and support for exporting MSMEs
Once operational, the facility is expected to generate more than 6,000 direct and indirect jobs in logistics, warehousing, transportation and related services, according to FedEx.
Increased reliability is also expected to strengthen the export and import capabilities of micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), while helping to reduce logistics costs and shorten delivery times.
As cargo operations at NMIA increase and more global players follow FedEx’s lead, this airport will become what it was always meant to be, a world-class logistics hub that places India at the center of global supply chains.
