Meta, the company behind Facebook, is expanding its sustainability initiatives and has selected Solarpack , a leading Spanish firm in renewable energy, as an ally. This new agreement signed between both parties guarantees that Meta will acquire the energy generated by two new solar developments that Solarpack has established in Indiana, USA.
Since 2020, Meta already operates with 100% renewable energy and seeks to continue strengthening this practice.
Solarpack promotes solar projects in Indiana
As for the technical details, the two solar projects promoted by Solarpack in Indiana have a combined capacity of 210 MW. This boost is significant for the state of Indiana, which currently only generates 10% of its energy from renewable sources , marking considerable progress in its decarbonization efforts.
For Meta, this agreement is a step forward towards its goal of achieving net zero emissions across its entire value chain by 2030.
The company, based in Getxo, Vizcaya, specializes in the development, construction, marketing and operation of large-scale renewable energy projects. Founded in 2005, the company has developed or built power plants with a total capacity of 2.5 GW . It now manages a project portfolio of 14 GW in 14 countries and operates 51 renewable projects totaling 1.7 GW, both in its own projects and through asset management agreements in Europe, Latin America and Asia.
Meta promotes sustainability with new solar developments
Leo Moreno, CEO of Solarpack, expressed his enthusiasm for supporting Meta’s sustainability goals and for the significant achievement this agreement represents for Solarpack’s expansion in the United States, in addition to its commitment to local carbon-free power generation for data centers.
The choice of Indiana as the location for these solar developments is no coincidence. The state has been actively seeking to increase its share of renewable energy in response to growing environmental and economic concerns. This alliance with Meta, in addition to benefiting both companies, also acts as a catalyst for future investments in clean energy in the region, thus promoting a more sustainable environment.
