Höegh Autoliners has ordered Everllence’s first marine ammonia engines for its Aurora-class vessels. These new propulsion systems, manufactured by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries in South Korea, will be ready for integration into four state-of-the-art car and truck carriers (PCTCs).
Ammonia engines for energy transition
The equipment ordered corresponds to four 7S60ME-LGIA two-stroke engines designed to operate with ammonia as fuel. ammonia as the main fuel and and liquid gas as back-up. This breakthrough will enable Höegh Autoliners to start zero-emission operations in 2027, aligning its sustainability goals with increasing international regulatory pressure.
Everllence, formerly known as MAN Energy Solutions, stresses that safety was the focus in the development of these engines, given the risk profile of ammonia. The company expects this fuel to be positioned alongside methanol. methanol and methane as one of the three main alternatives in the clean propulsion market.
With nearly a century of experience in maritime transport, Höegh AutolinersHöegh Autoliners reaffirms its leadership in the RoRo segment. The Aurora class, with a capacity of 9100 car-equivalent units, will be the largest and most sustainable PCTC built to date, with compatibility certifications to operate with ammonia and methanol.
