The German city of Düsseldorf marks a technical and environmental breakthrough with the inauguration of Europe’s most powerful hydrogen refueling station. With a capacity of up to 5 tons per day and the ability to simultaneously refuel various types of vehicles, from buses to trucks, this new infrastructure redefines the standard in hydrogen refueling. hydrogen supply for heavy and public for heavy and public transport.

About the new hydrogen station

Located at Höherweg, the station was developed by H2 MOBILITY in collaboration with Rheinbahn and Stadtwerke Düsseldorf, integrating patent-pending technology capable of handling pressures of 350, 500 and 700 bar. This breakthrough enables fast and efficient recharging, essential for the continuous operation of urban fleets.

Stadtwerke Düsseldorf, for its part, is building an electrolyzer 2 megawatt electrolyzer that will be operational in 2026, enabling the station to be supplied with renewable hydrogen. renewable hydrogen produced locally from electricity generated at its waste plant. In the meantime, the station is already running on certified green hydrogen, immediately reducing emissions from urban transport.

North Rhine-Westphalia’s Minister for Economic Affairs Mona Neubaur and Mayor Stephan Keller emphasized that the installation is part of a comprehensive strategy to achieve climate neutrality in the city by 2035. This initiative is complemented by the “HyTrucks.NRW” and “1,000 NRW Fuel Cell Buses” programs, which aim to consolidate a robust network of emission-free vehicles in the region.

Rheinbahn, public transport operator with 20 hydrogen buses hydrogen buses in circulation in circulation, highlights the value of this station for improving its daily operations and accelerating the transition of its fleet to clean technologies. For H2 MOBILITY, the station represents a new generation of hydrogen infrastructure with a focus on urban logistics, energy integration and operational efficiency.

This project is financially supported by the German Federal Ministry of Transport through the NIP 2 program and positions Düsseldorf as a European benchmark in the decarbonization of transport.
