The Norwegian Offshore Directorate (NOD) has granted Equinor Energy AS authorization to drill well 6407/1-B-2 H, located in the Haltenbanken region within the Norwegian Sea. The operation is part of production license 1121 and was approved under Section 13 of the Resource Management Regulations.
The licensed well is tied into the development of the Kristin South field, where Equinor is seeking to expand its production capacity. The company will operate from the semi-submersible platform Transocean Encouragewhich specializes in highly complex offshore drilling.
This infrastructure has been chosen for its technical efficiency in Norwegian maritime environments.
Equinor’s role in the Norwegian Sea
The Norwegian Offshore Directorate (NOD) continues to strengthen its role as regulator of the energy sector, supervising deepwater drilling permits and ensuring strict compliance with its regulations. Production license 1121 includes technical and environmental guidelines that Equinor must follow throughout the campaign.
Well 6407/1-B-2 H represents an important technical component of Equinor’s energy strategy in the Norwegian Sea. The drilling will provide key information to assess the continuity of the reservoir and its potential for future exploitation. It also aligns with the company’s long-term plans for offshore exploration.
The operation is scheduled to start next month with logistical support from offshore central Norway. The combination of advanced drilling technology, regulatory oversight and operational experience reinforces Equinor’s commitment to sustainable resource development in the Norwegian offshore.
