Eni strengthens its presence in Indonesia with gas discovery in Konta-1 well

The Konta-1 well could bring the total discovered volume to more than 28 billion cubic meters of gas.

Eni drilled the Konta-1 well to a depth of 4,575 meters in 570 meters water depth within the Muara Bakau block. The result was the discovery of gas in four Miocene sand formations, all with excellent petrophysical properties.

One of these layers was tested, yielding production of up to 900,000 cubic meters per day of gas and 700 barrels per day of condensate. The combined potential of the well is estimated at 2.2 million m³/d of gas and 1,600 bbl/d of condensate.

Konta-1 well boosts initial estimates with high potential

Preliminary estimates indicate a discovered gas volume of approximately 17 billion cubic meters. 17 billion cubic meters (bcm), which could exceed 28,000 bcm if adjacent formations not yet drilled are considered. This figure represents a significant contribution to Eni’s regional gas portfolio.

The location of the discovery is key to accelerating its development. Konta-1 is close to already operating facilities, which would facilitate integration with the infrastructure of the Jangkrik and Merakes fields, where Eni already produces 90,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day.

This discovery strengthens Eni’s near-field exploration strategy in the Kutei basin. It also aligns with plans for the future joint venture with PETRONAS (NewCo), which will operate 19 blocks in Indonesia and Malaysia. This collaboration envisions an investment of more than $15 billion over five years to spur eight new developments and drill 15 exploratory wells. The joint goal is to unlock up to 10 billion barrels of oil equivalent in exploration potential.

Future exploration in the region

Driven by the Konta-1 results, Eni is already contemplating an intensive drilling campaign for 2026, which will include four new wells in the same basin. The discovery, due to its geographic proximity and favorable geology, reinforces confidence in the region’s energy potential.

Present in Indonesia since 2001, Eni strengthens its strategic positioning in Southeast Asia through key assets such as the Muara Bakau PSC, of which it controls 88.334%. This progress supports its transition to a more integrated and sustainable energy model, while expanding its international footprint in the offshore sector Asian offshore sector.
