An important exhibition took place at the port of Gothenburg, where leading companies such as PowerCell Group, Hitachi Energy, Skanska, Volvo Group and Linde Gas.joined forces to highlight the capabilities of the HyFlex generator, a hydrogen electric generator as a sustainable alternative solution to traditional fossil fuel-based options.
The event was carried out in Sweden, where an electric excavator was successfully powered by the generator independently of the main power grid during a two-week test period.
The HyFlex system and its energy range
The 100 kW generator leverages hydrogen fuel cell technology supplied by PowerCell, supplemented by batteries to generate power. This configuration allows energy production free of greenhouse gas emissions, without the need for grid connection.
From March 4 to 17, 2024, Volvo Construction Equipment’s electric excavator, which was powered by the HyFlex system using green hydrogen provided by Linde, was put to the test. The test was conducted at a construction site operated by Skanska, located within the port of Gothenburg, demonstrating the feasibility and efficiency of this technology in real working environments.
According to Tobias Hansson, managing director of Hitachi Energy in Sweden, this demonstration event highlights the possibility of adopting fuel cell technology as a clean and efficient alternative to diesel generators. conventional diesel generators. conventional.
Continuous power through hydrogen electric generator
With the Port of Gothenburg embarking on several hydrogen-related projects, including the installation of refueling stations, Viktor Allgurén, Innovation Manager, said that this demonstration aligns perfectly with current port initiatives, promoting a greener and more sustainable future.
Richard Berkling, CEO of PowerCell Group said that while the initial focus of this installation has been the construction industry, the company’s vision encompasses a broader range of emission-free applications. This includes the maritime and harbor domain, in order to continue creating sustainable energy solutions in the future.
