Enel Colombia has reached an agreement for the sale of the Cartagena Thermal Power Plant and its entire stake in the Cartagena Central Port Company to SMN Termocartagena. This agreement will enter into force as of December 1, 2023 , at which time the SMN Termocartagena group will assume the management and operation of this power generation plant.
The Thermal Power Plant, located in the industrial area of Cartagena, has an installed capacity of 203 MW and uses gas and/or liquid fuel for power generation.
In line with its strategy of focusing on the development of non-conventional renewable energy projects, especially in the Caribbean region, Enel Colombia has decided to sell the thermoelectric plant. The purpose of this sale is to contribute to the diversification of Colombia’s energy matrix .
The new owner is committed to maintaining the operation of the plant and guaranteeing the country’s energy security, complying with the technical and sustainable standards required by the national energy transition .
The current position of Enel Colombia
Currently, Enel Colombia, through its subsidiary Enel Green Power, is building around 800 MW of non-conventional renewable energy capacity in the departments of Cesar, Magdalena and Atlántico, which represents an investment of more than 2.5 trillion pesos. .
Enel Green Power’s portfolio in Colombia includes various solar and wind projects . Among them are the La Loma solar park, the expansion of the El Paso solar park, the Guayepo I & II projects, which is the largest solar park under construction in the country, and the Fundación solar park, one of the 11 projects selected in the 2021 renewable energy auction.
In addition, Enel Green Power has three wind projects in La Guajira: Tumawind (200 MW), Chemesky (100 MW) and Windpeshi (205 MW). However, the construction of the latter has been suspended indefinitely due to the challenges the company was facing with the local communities near the project.
