The dismantling process of the Andorra (Teruel) thermal power plant, one of the most significant events in Endesa’s energy transition , took another step forward with the recent explosion of the plant’s third boiler . This event marked the end of a stage for one of the most emblematic coal facilities in Spain, which will be completed in 2027 with the definitive closure of coal-fired power plants on the peninsula.
Andorra’s future is focused on renewable energy
The closure of the Andorra plant not only represents the end of an era for the coal industry , but also the beginning of a new chapter for the region, focused on renewable energy . Endesa is committed to the creation of a new energy infrastructure that will generate 1,843 MW of renewable power , with the promise of more than 6,300 jobs during the construction phase and 370 direct jobs linked to the renewable project. In addition, this development is accompanied by a socioeconomic plan to revitalize the area, which previously depended on the thermal power plant.
During the decommissioning process, which was completed in July 2024, 80% of the workers involved were local, underlining the initiative’s positive impact on the region’s economy. More than 90% of the waste generated during the plant’s decommissioning was recovered, demonstrating Endesa’s commitment to a responsible and sustainable energy transition.
This renewable project, in addition to generating employment, aims to transform the industrial fabric of the region, reactivating local economic development through the construction of energy infrastructures that will not only supply the region, but will also play a key role in Spain’s energy transition.
