Contracts for Sunrise Wind and Empire Wind 1 projects finalized

New York Governor Kathy Hochul has announced the finalization of contracts for the Empire Wind 1 and Sunrise Wind offshore wind projects as part of the state’s fourth offshore wind bidding process.

Empire Wind 1, developed by Equinor, and Sunrise Wind, developed by Ørsted and Eversource, are projects that together will generate more than 1,700 MW, enough to power more than 1 million homes. These projects represent the largest power generation in the state in more than 35 years and are expected to come on line in 2026.

These projects will create more than 800 construction jobs in the short term and will involve a $2 billion investment in the state’s economic development, benefiting disadvantaged communities. Over their 25-year lifetimes, Empire Wind 1 and Sunrise Wind are expected to generate more than $6 billion in economic benefits for the state.

The projects have passed most federal and state permitting milestones. Empire Wind 1 has recently received approval from the New York State Public Service Commission to connect to the state’s electric grid. In addition, the Brooklyn South Marine Terminal is being transformed into a long-term operations and maintenance center for this project. for this project.

These projects are expected to have a modest financial impact on residential customers, with an estimated increase of about 2% or about $2.09 per month in average bills, according to the governor’s office.

These projects are part of New York’s 10-Point Action Plan to boost the renewable energy industry. renewable energy on a large scale and achieve the state’s Climate Act goal of developing 9,000 megawatts of offshore wind energy by 2035.
