The multinational Voltalia, in collaboration with TAQA Arabia, has signed a strategic agreement with the Egyptian Ministry of Electricity to modernize the emblematic Zafarana wind farm , located 130 kilometers southeast of Cairo. This project, which combines wind and solar energy , aims to reach a total capacity of up to 3 gigawatts, making it one of the most ambitious developments in the country.

Importance of the Zafarana wind farm in renewable energy

Zafarana has historically been a milestone in the MENA region (Middle East and North Africa), being the first large-scale wind farm in Egypt and the region . The current wind turbines, installed two decades ago, are reaching the end of their useful life.

This is why an optimisation and modernisation plan is necessary to ensure that the site continues to provide renewable energy to the national grid. With its excellent wind and solar radiation potential, Zafarana has established itself as one of the most suitable locations for this type of hybrid project.

The new project will combine 1.1 gigawatts of wind power with 2.1 gigawatts of solar PV, creating a large-scale hybrid renewable energy facility . This approach will make the most of the available land, allowing for expanded generation capacity and improving energy efficiency in the region. In its initial phase, the project is expected to be operational by 2028 .

Egypt’s commitment to renewable energy

This project is a reflection of Egypt’s strong commitment to the energy transition and its goal of reducing dependence on conventional energy sources. With the support of government authorities and the collaboration of the private sector, as demonstrated by the partnership between Voltalia and TAQA Arabia, Egypt is set to establish itself as a leader in clean energy production in the region.

The signing ceremony, which took place in Cairo, was attended by senior figures from the Egyptian government, including the Prime Minister of Egypt, HE Dr. Mostafa Madbouly, and the Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, HE Dr. Mahmoud Esmat. Also participating were senior executives from Voltalia and TAQA Arabia, such as Sébastien Clerc, CEO of Voltalia, and Pakinam Kafafi, CEO of TAQA Arabia, who expressed their satisfaction with this new step towards a more sustainable energy future.
