The state-owned company Ecopetrol will build the largest green hydrogen plant in Latin America at the Cartagena Refinery. This project will require an investment of 28.5 million dollars, with the aim of reaching an installed capacity of 5 megawatts and producing up to 800 tons of high-purity hydrogen per year, reaching 99.97%.

The hydrogen production mechanism will be generated through electrolysis, using energy from a solar farm at the refinery, which integrates 22 megawatts of capacity. This integration will allow reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 7,700 tons per year. In addition, state authorities estimate that the plant will be 100 times larger than Ecopetrol’s pilot projects in operation since 2022.

The plant will be operational by the first half of 2026 and is part of Ecopetrol’s Hydrogen Strategic Plan 2040. This initiative seeks to consolidate the company’s position in the production of low-emission hydrogen in Latin America. According to the International Energy Agency, the refinery will be among the largest projects worldwide in this technology.
The production of green hydrogen will strengthen Colombia’s role on the global map of clean energy. Ecopetrol estimates that the hydrogen business could generate between 400 and 485 million dollars of annual Ebitda by 2040, boosting the country’s economic and environmental development.
