Ecopetrol reduces CO2 emissions with suction sail assisted shipping

Ecopetrol implemented a maritime transport operation using a vessel equipped with an auxiliary wind propulsion system. This technology is based on suction sails and reduces carbon dioxide emissions by 49% compared to other vessels.

The trip involved the transfer of 300 thousand barrels of naphtha between the Cartagena Refinery and the Cartagena Refinery and the Pozos Colorados Maritime Terminal in Santa Marta. The vessel, equipped with three aerodynamic sails, used the force of the wind to optimize thrust, achieving a more efficient operation in terms of fuel consumption and energy performance.

Suction sails, also known as rotating sails, capture air currents to generate additional thrust, which contributes to cleaner navigation. This initiative is part of Ecopetrol’s strategy to advance the decarbonization of its operations and meet its sustainability and competitiveness goals.

This is not the first time the company has adopted this technology. With this second operation, Ecopetrol consolidates its commitment to maritime logistics with low environmental impact and demonstrates its commitment to the country’s energy transition.

Julio César Herrera, the company’s Vice President of Sales and Marketing, mentioned that this type of solution generates business value while contributing to a more sustainable energy future for Colombia.

This progress reaffirms Ecopetrol’s interest in integrating technological tools that reduce emissions associated with the transportation of hydrocarbons. The experience with wind-assisted vessels represents a step forward on the road to a cleaner and more efficient logistics infrastructure.
