Ecopetrol produces high purity green hydrogen for SITP bus in Bogota

This project seeks to evaluate the performance of hydrogen in real conditions and validate safety, efficiency and performance standards.
La producción del hidrógeno verde para el transporte en Bogotá

Ecopetrol has planned to produce green hydrogen in Bogota with a purity of 99.99%. The quality places this energy source among the highest international standards for urban passenger transportation. This project is part of a sustainable mobility pilot promoted in collaboration with Transmilenio, Green Móvil, Superpolo, Fanalca and Fenoge.

Green hydrogen production for transportation in Bogota

To make this initiative possible, a PEM technology electrolyzer was installed with a power of 165 kW and a capacity to generate more than 23 tons of green H2 per year. The hydrogenerator is a system that allows supplying the bus in less than 10 minutes and a storage network of 140 kg in high-pressure cylinders.

According to Ecopetrol, tests are being carried out in controlled environments before the specially assembled bus is put into operation on real SITP routes. The objective is to evaluate the performance of hydrogen in real conditions and validate safety, efficiency and performance standards.

This development ratifies the state-owned company’s commitment to the decarbonization of transportation and the construction of a diversified portfolio of energy solutions. At the same time, it positions Colombia as a regional reference in the use of green hydrogen in mobility applications, adding to the results obtained previously in Cartagena, where the Colombian company operated a hydrogen plant in real conditions and with ultra-high pressure.

The initiative demonstrates that it is feasible to implement clean technologies in Colombian public transport. With the accumulated technical knowledge, the doors are open for the development of commercial projects that integrate green hydrogen as a real alternative in urban mobility in the country.
