Eco Wave Power, a leading onshore wave energy technology company, has received final authorization for the construction and demonstration of its innovative technology at the Port of Los Angeles. On March 27, 2025, the Port granted Revocable Permit 25-05, allowing the company to begin installation of its wave energy conversion system at Pier 70 in San Pedro, California.
Construction of the wave energy system begins
This permit is the final step required following the approval of a National Park Permit (NWP) 52, granted by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in November 2024. With all permits secured, Eco Wave is ready to begin construction on the project, which is expected to be operational in the next 2 to 3 months.
The Los Angeles project , co-financed by Shell Marine Renewable Energy (Shell MRE), will mark a significant advance in generating electricity through the use of ocean waves. Under the permit, Eco Wave will use approximately 10,396 square feet of land and 2,016 square feet of water to install its wave energy system.
The installation will consist of up to eight wave energy floats, which will be placed on an existing concrete pier structure at Municipal Pier One. Additionally, an energy conversion unit , consisting of two 20-foot containers, will be connected to the floats. With the conversion unit already shipped and on site, the installation is expected to be completed by the end of the second quarter of 2025.
