Drilling begins at Uchuva-2 well to extract natural gas

Two companies have begun drilling the Uchuva-2 well, located in the Tayrona Block in the Colombian Caribbean, as part of their commitment to incorporate the natural gas needed to drive a just energy transition in Colombia.

The purpose of this appraisal well is to validate the magnitude of the natural gas discovery. natural gas discovery made in July 2022 in the Uchuva-1 exploratory well. This discovery, located in deep water at a depth of 837 meters, is about 32 kilometers in a straight line from the coast and 76 kilometers from the city of Santa Marta.

Energetic importance of the Uchuva-2 well

In the Tayrona Block, Petrobras acts as operator with a 44.4% interest, while Ecopetrol holds 55.6%. For several months, this company has been working intensively with an interdisciplinary team to consolidate and develop a portfolio of offshore projects that will guarantee the gas needed for the energy transition.

The discovery at Uchuva-1 has been described as very significant for Ecopetrol and Colombia, consolidating the relevance of the Caribbean as one of the main sources of natural gas in the country.

This well will allow us to confirm previous findings and obtain the necessary information about the reservoir for the planning and execution of the connection with the consumption centers, contributing significantly to the country’s energy supply“.
