DP Energy has confirmed plans to develop the Windy Plains Renewable Energy Park, a large-scale wind farm with an installed capacity of up to 1,400 megawatts in McKinlay Shire, Queensland. The facility is located about 40 kilometers southeast of Julia Creek, a project that will integrate a battery energy storage system (BESS)(BESS) 500 MW/2000 MWh battery energy storage system.
Wind farm aims to strengthen Queensland’s energy grid
The facility will operate approximately 197 wind turbines and will take advantage of wind speeds in excess of 8.5 m/s, in flat and sparsely populated terrain. This improvement optimizes the efficiency of the project and its integration with the new CopperString transmission line, an infrastructure built by Powerlink Queensland that will be essential to connect generation with consumption.
During the construction phase, multiple direct jobs will be created, while the operation of the park will generate permanent jobs and an indirect stimulus to the local economy through the demand for services, materials and products. The company has opened a public survey to guide the creation of a Community Benefit Fund that seeks lasting results for the region.
The company will hold an information session on August 13 at the Julia Creek Civic Centre as part of its commitment to early and transparent community engagement. In addition, residents, First Nations representatives and regional authorities are expected to participate in the process to discuss the benefits and challenges of the project.
The Windy Plains development is part of DP Energy ‘s wider portfolio of projects in Australia, including the Callide wind farm (430 MW) and the Euston wind farm (700 MW). The company has driven more than 1 GW of renewable energy globally and is currently developing 4.5 GW in markets including Ireland, the UK, Canada and Australia.
This project design is based on low environmental impact principles, with ongoing technical and cultural assessments. DP Energy’s goal is to align its growth with carbon neutrality objectives and accelerate the transition to clean, sustainable and socially inclusive energy sources.
