Dow and X-energy Reactor Company have officially filed a construction permit application with the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission ( NRC ). This major project aims to create a small modular nuclear reactor ( SMR ) in Seadrift, Texas.

The construction permit for the nuclear reactor in Texas

The project is designed to supply power and industrial steam to Dow’s UCC Seadrift Operations manufacturing plant, and is supported by the U.S. Department of Energy’s ( DOE ) Advanced Reactor Demonstration Program ( ARDP ).

Through this initiative, DOE seeks to accelerate the development and deployment of advanced nuclear reactors to replace existing energy assets at the Seadrift plant, thereby improving sustainability and reducing Scope 1 and 2 emissions .

The proposed reactor, Xe-100 , is notable for its passive safety and modular design, making it a viable option for clean energy generation. With a focus on cost reduction and faster construction times compared to nuclear technologies, X-energy has worked closely with the NRC to demonstrate the superior safety profile of its technology.

This small modular reactor aims to supply Dow’s Seadrift plant with clean, reliable energy, which will strengthen its competitiveness and also contribute to global efforts to combat climate change by reducing carbon emissions.

Together with our world-class partner, Dow, we will demonstrate how the technology deployed in Seadrift, Texas, can be quickly and efficiently replicated to meet the incredible growth in energy demand across the United States.

J. Clay Sell, CEO of X-energy.

With the promise of low energy costs and emissions elimination , this project could have a significant impact on the U.S. energy industry by providing a competitive alternative to other clean energy sources.
