Mexico captured global attention with the inauguration of the largest wastewater treatment plant in the world, in 2017, located in Atotonilco, Hidalgo. This project not only remains ambitious in its scale, but also in its environmental and social impact.
Cost of the Atotonilco treatment plant
This impressive wastewater treatment infrastructure was developed by the Aguas Treatadas del Valle de México Consortium, where ACCIONA Agua plays a leading role. With an approximate cost of 500 million euros , the plant processes an average volume of 31.5 m 3 /s , ensuring that 100% of the samples meet the effluent quality standards.
The operation of the plant has a direct and positive effect on the quality of life of local communities, particularly in the field of agriculture. By treating the wastewater of approximately 12.6 million people, equivalent to the population of Mexico City, The plant allows for the safe reuse of water in agriculture and advanced irrigation systems .
This process facilitates the transition of crops from restricted to non-restricted categories, offering new opportunities for sustainable development.
Its capacity and technology
In addition to its impressive treatment capabilities, the Atotonilco WWTP plant can increase its capacity to 35 m 3 /s under certain conditions and up to 50 m 3 /s if necessary. This system also incorporates technologies to convert biogas into energy , which reinforces the sustainability of the project.
An additional and fundamental aspect of the Atotonilco treatment plant is its commitment to environmental education, as programs are being developed to raise awareness among the local population about the importance of wastewater treatment and maintaining healthy aquatic ecosystems.
