A new boost to e-methanol e-methanol has been launched by DNV with the presentation of the first public tender portal for the procurement of this synthetic fuel within the European Union and the United Kingdom. The objective is clear: to facilitate long-term agreements between a European producer and industrial buyers, thus guaranteeing a reliable supply in compliance with European regulatory frameworks.

E-methanol as the backbone of decarbonization

As the energy transition gains momentum, e-methanol is gaining ground as a key energy vector. Produced from renewable renewable hydrogen and captured biogenic carbon, its potential to decarbonize sectors such as shipping, heavy industry and aviation positions it as a viable alternative to traditional fuels.

Its ability to comply with regulations such as RED III, EU ETS and ReFuelEU Aviation makes it an option aligned with the objectives of the International Maritime Organization and national blending mandates in countries such as Germany, Spain and France.

A mechanism to close the supply gap

The European market is facing increasing tension in the supply of biofuels. Faced with this situation, DNV’s proposal is presented as a structured solution to ensure access to e-methanol certified as RFNBO backed by certification from the start of production.

The bidding process consists of two phases. A non-binding pre-qualification stage to select potential buyers, followed by a round of direct negotiations. This approach seeks to reduce risks for all parties and increase the bankability of e-methanol as a product.

Tangible benefits for industry and transportation

DNV, in its role as a neutral entity, offers a platform that brings transparency and certainty to the procurement process. Participating companies will be able to negotiate stable prices, aligned with regulatory requirements, allowing them to plan for the future without being exposed to market variations or changes in legislation.

Deliveries are scheduled to begin in the second half of 2028, with logistical flexibility for buyers located throughout the region. The tender is open to maritime operators, industrial users, traders and entities with carbon neutral targets .

Accelerating the electrofuels market

The technology is available, but the commercial mechanisms to scale it are lacking.

Santiago Blanco, vice-president of DNV, pointed out.

The launch of this tender seeks to do just that: to translate climate ambitions into concrete contracts that will enable progress towards a low-carbon economy.

DNV’s initiative not only sets a precedent in the electrofuels market, but could consolidate e-methanol as a bankable and essential option in the energy mix of the future.
