As part of the 2025 marine survey campaign for the “Marine Energy – South Coast” project, meteo-ocean buoys have recently been deployed off the south coast of Ireland. This observing system has been supplied by TechWorks Marine in collaboration with Fugro, and will remain operational until the end of 2026.
Deployment and supply of meteo-ocean buoys
Data buoys are used to collect critical information about the marine environment. Parameters recorded include waves, wind, water quality, currents and solar radiation. The data generated will be used by EirGrid to inform technical decisions in the installation of the offshore wind power transmission infrastructure. offshore wind power transmission infrastructure.
This project is part of the Irish government’s efforts to expand its offshore renewable energy capacity and strengthen the national power grid. EirGrid, the company responsible for planning and developing the transmission infrastructure, is leading this deployment with an evidence-based approach.
Through ocean monitoring buoys, environmental impact assessment of future facilities will be facilitated. Continuous data will allow for a better understanding of marine dynamics, essential for the design and siting of subsea cables as conversion stations.
TechWorks Marine, a specialist in marine technologies based on real-time data, has deployed these monitoring systems with technology adapted to the Irish environment. The partnership with Fugro allows the integration of advanced observation technologies, increasing the accuracy of the data collected.
