Delia tunnel boring machine arrives at Elio station and strengthens the progress of Metro de Lima

The Delia tunnel boring machine arrived at the Elio station (E-08), at the intersection of Venezuela and Aurelio García avenues, consolidating a new step in the development of Line 2 of the Lima and Callao subway system. Currently, the general route of Line 2 already has more than 23 kilometers built of the 27 kilometers planned. This infrastructure will connect Ate with Callao in just 45 minutes, transforming the urban commuting urban commuting Lima and drastically reducing daily travel time.

MTC participation and on-site supervision

Delia’s arrival in Elio was overseen by the Minister of Transport and Communications, Aldo Prieto, who highlighted the positive impact that the subway system on the quality of life of the citizens. At this stage, the Elio station is 84% complete. The excavation of the section from La Alborada (E-09) to Elio involved 728 meters of drilling with the installation of concrete rings, necessary to guarantee the structural stability of the tunnel.

With this stage completed, the Delia tunnel boring machine is preparing to head to San Marcos station, its next destination within the Cercado de Lima. During its journey it has crossed multiple stations such as Nicolás Ayllón, Parque Murillo and Tingo María, consolidating the subway route with advanced engineering standards.

Line 2 will operate with automated trains under the GoA4 standardstandard, i.e., without the need for a driver. This system will allow for greater frequency and operational efficiency, adding Lima to the group of cities with intelligent transportation. It is estimated that by 2030, more than 1.2 million daily passengers will use this subway network.

White march and next steps

Phase 1A of the project is currently operating in white run between the Mercado Santa Anita and Evitamiento stations, with five stations enabled for free use. More than 26 million transfers have been made on this section since December 2023, as part of the system’s testing and adaptation stage.

The arrival of the Delia tunnel boring machine in Elio symbolizes more than just a technical advance. It is part of the process that will provide millions of Lima residents with a predictable, safe and modern means of transportation in the near future.
