The Great Plains Industrial Park, located in Labette County, Kansas, has been selected as the site where Deep Fission will install its first advanced nuclear reactor. The company, which specializes in subway technology for power generationwill break ground with a groundbreaking ceremony on December 9, 2025.
Advanced nuclear reactor as pilot base
This development is part of the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Reactor Pilot Program, designed to accelerate the deployment of advanced nuclear technologies. Deep Fission seeks to validate its patented design, the Gravity Reactor, a modular pressurized water unit installed at a depth of one mile that takes advantage of natural geologic containment to enhance safety and efficiency.
The selection of the Great Plains Industrial Park is not accidental: it is an infrastructure with multiple logistical advantages and long-term growth potential. The company and the Great Plains Development Authority have signed a letter of intent to collaborate on both the pilot phase and future business expansion.
According to Deep Fission, subway technology will reduce the visual impact, minimize the surface footprint and offer an energy solution that will energy solution and cost-effective energy solution. The company aims to achieve reactor activation (criticality) by July 4, 2026, subject to regulatory approval from the DOE.
Institutional support and community involvement
The project has both federal and state backing. Kansas Lieutenant Governor David Toland highlighted the potential of this technology to diversify the state’s energy matrix. Senators Jerry Moran and Roger Marshall stressed the importance of energy independence and job creation.
In the educational field, Labette Community College has shown interest in adapting its training programs to support the demands of the new sector. The synergy between industry, government and community seeks to position southeast Kansas as a benchmark in advanced nuclear energy.
