Construction of the first vessel of the MPV 4916 series officially began with the keel-laying ceremony at the Albwardy Damen shipyard in Sharjah. The vessel, christened “Smokey,” represents a new phase in the nearly eight-decade partnership between Damen and Herman Senior, companies that share family roots and a common vision of innovation, quality and sustainability.

The MPV 4916 and its adaptable design

The Smokey was designed to operate in demanding offshore energy environments, integrating DP2 dynamic positioning capabilities, four-point mooring system and support poles. These features will allow it to operate with precision in complex offshore conditions. In addition, it will be equipped with a 45-ton capacity hydraulic A-frame and a winch with active wave compensation, which improves lifting maneuvers.

The MPV 4916 incorporates Damen Marine’s SCR(Selective Catalytic Reduction) system. SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) systemThe MPV 4916 incorporates Damen Marine’s SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) system, which reduces NOx emissions and meets IMO Tier III standards. In addition, its design contemplates a future conversion to electric or hybrid propulsion based on methanol, aligning with the environmental requirements of the international shipping industry.

Smokey’s design complies with the SPS Code and the Maritime Labor Convention(MLC) 2006, and includes the COMF-3 notation, ensuring high standards of comfort and safety for up to 34 crew members. These elements make the vessel a versatile, safe and future-proof solution for the offshore market.

During the ceremony, two coins were welded to the keel: a Dutch Rijksdaalder and an Emirati dirham, reflecting the link between the shipowner’s country of origin and the construction site. This gesture, more than symbolic, strengthens the connection between cultures and the international dimension of the project.
