The U.S. Coast Guard, in collaboration with partners, continues to manage the incident involving a cargo vessel that became stranded in the Delaware River off Philadelphia. On Wednesday evening, the 623-foot-long motor vessel Algoma Verity ran aground approximately one mile north of the Benjamin Franklin Bridge, disrupting traffic on one of the region’s most important waterways.
The Philadelphia ship stranding incident
On Thursday morning, authorities confirmed that the vessel was outside the main shipping channel. A team from the Coast Guard’s Delaware Bay, along with representatives from the Algoma Verity , boarded the vessel to closely monitor the situation and formulate a plan to safely move it to a nearby marine terminal.
The situation raised concerns about maritime traffic, so a restricted security zone was established from the Benjamin Franklin Bridge to the Tioga Terminal. Vessels wishing to transit the area must follow Coast Guard guidelines by contacting the Command Center in advance.
Fortunately, there have been no injuries or reports of pollution so far. The ship, which was carrying a cargo of approximately 45,000 tons of solar salt, was en route north when the incident occurred. Although the grounding did not cause major damage, the Coast Guard is still investigating the cause and will continue to monitor the area to ensure no additional problems arise.
