Scientists at Northwest Polytechnic University in China have developed a drone powered by laser beam energy that allows it to stay in the air “forever.”
While laser systems are often used to develop weapons that shoot down drones, Chinese scientists decided to put the technology to another use, creating a way to harness the high-powered energy of laser beams. They thought that if a drone were equipped with a photoelectric conversion module, which converts light energy into electricity, a high-powered laser beam could remotely power it.
The Northwestern Polytechnic University team said their recent experiment successfully combined the autonomous charging process with intelligent signal processing and transmission technology, demonstrating the limitless potential for drone airborne lingering.
“The highlights of the research are the 24-hour intelligent vision tracking system and long-range autonomous power replenishment for optical propulsion drones,” the team noted.
The researchers argue that unmanned aircraft of this type could participate in tasks of traffic control, security patrol, rescue missions during natural disasters or logistics.
