China is building the world’s first underwater data center . With a capacity equivalent to the power of 6 million personal computers , this innovative underwater center takes advantage of the natural cooling of the sea to significantly reduce the energy consumption that would normally be required with conventional cooling systems.

Underwater data center: the first in the world

This is a highly ambitious project that could have a significant impact on the future of sustainability thanks to its underwater location. News about this underwater data center has received extensive coverage on Chinese television, highlighting its potential as a technological revolution.

It should be noted that this data center will occupy a plot of 68,000 m 2 , equivalent to almost 7 hectares. In this space, up to 100 storage units can be installed, each weighing 1,100 tons. These units have the processing capacity equivalent to 60,000 computers, which means that with one hundred of these devices, the center will have the capacity to process the work equivalent to 6 million computers.

Likewise, another of its notable elements lies in the use of natural water cooling, which makes it possible to stop consuming up to 122 million kilowatts per hour. This aspect is significant, since cooling is usually one of the areas of greatest energy consumption in servers worldwide. Each data unit has an estimated lifespan of up to 25 years, ensuring the long-term sustainability and viability of this new center.

In a notable milestone, China is positioned as the first country to take advantage of underwater spaces to create highly efficient data centers with a lower environmental impact compared to their terrestrial counterparts with similar characteristics. This pioneering approach could mark the beginning of a series of data centers that take advantage of the natural environment of the sea to achieve optimal results with minimal energy consumption, provided that the success of this project is consolidated over time.
