According to the state agency Corporación de Fomento de la Producción (Corfo), Chile announced this week the opening for the development of value-added lithium products, in its attempt to create an industry around the coveted light metal.

Starting August 31, entities with verifiable experience, technical and financial capabilities will be able to apply for access to lithium carbonate and hydroxide produced by SQM Salar S.A. (a company dedicated to brine extraction in the Salar de Atacama) at favorable prices and ensure a stable supply until 2030.

Chile has one of the world’s largest reserves of the so-called white gold, but to date it has not been able to capitalize on its potential beyond exploitation by the U.S. producer Albemarle and the local SQM.

With this call, Corfo invites companies seeking to become specialized producers of value-added lithium derivatives in Chile to develop and produce precursors and cathode material, lithium battery components, among other applications.

A press release from this entity specified that the preferential price will correspond to the FOB (value of the merchandise placed on board a maritime transport), calculated on 20 percent of the volume exported by SQM Salar S.A. with the lowest price in the last six months available.
