The joint venture between Chevron Nigeria Ltd and NNPC Ltd has confirmed the successful discovery of the Awodi-07 well, located on the western shelf of the Niger Delta. This discovery represents a key reinforcement of the country’s national hydrocarbon reserves. hydrocarbon reserves and reflects the fruits of a high-level operational collaboration.
It should be noted that the Niger Delta is a region located in southern Nigeria, rich in energy resources and distinct from neighboring Niger. This area has historically been one of the most relevant for the Nigerian oil industry.
Oil operations in the Niger Delta
Drilling activities began in November 2025 and were completed in mid-December 2025. During that time, the teams executed all operations under strict safety and regulatory compliance standards, closing the well after extensive data acquisition and technical testing.
The well results revealed significant oil in multiple zones of the reservoir, strengthening the commercial development outlook for the region. This technical evaluation, combined with a rigorous exploration approach, marks a step forward in the production expansion strategy.
Institutional voices support the finding
Group CEO of NNPC Ltd, Bashir Bayo Ojulari, highlighted that this achievement is in line with the country’s objectives of securing its energy matrix and providing sustainable value. For his part, Udy Ntia, executive vice president of upstream at NNPC Ltd, remarked that the Awodi-07 results are a sign of the positive impact of the reforms implemented under the Petroleum Industry Law.
This partnership aims to achieve production of 146,000 barrels per day, in line with the Nigerian government’s aspirations to consolidate its role in the global supply of crude oil. Chevron contributes 40% of the oilives of this joint venture, while 60% belongs to NNPC Ltd.
Prospects for resource monetization
With the validation of Awodi-07, the western Niger Delta region consolidates its position as one of the most promising areas for the country’s energy industry. The next step will be to move towards monetization and sustainable development of the newly identified resource.
