Construction of the Nitzana gas pipeline
This pipeline, which will take approximately three years to build, will have a transport capacity of 600 million cubic feet per day, bringing Israel’s total export capacity to Egypt to more than 2.2 billion cubic feet per day.
The agreement follows the signing last month of a $35 billion export contract between the owners of the Leviathan field – NewMed, Chevron and Ratio Energies –to supply Egypt over the next few years. Leviathan, located off the Israeli coast, holds reserves estimated at 600 billion cubic meters of natural gas, making it one of the most important energy assets in the region.
In addition, producer Energean has announced plans to send up to 2 billion cubic meters of gas per year through Nitzana from its Katlan field, which is scheduled to begin production in 2027.
The construction of the Nitzana pipeline is part of a broader strategy to diversify gas export routes. gas export routes, reduce diversify Israeli gas export routes, reduce pressure on the Egyptian energy system, and consolidate energy partnerships in the eastern Mediterranean.
