ChatGPT in Volkswagen vehicles
Volkswagen ‘s latest update for several of its ID EV models incorporates a popular new virtual assistant: ChatGPT . The German automaker has opened CES 2024, which is being held in Las Vegas, announcing its intention to include the chatbot as standard in most of its passenger vehicles.
The Volkswagen Group as a whole has been an interesting OEM to follow over the past two years. As the Group’s entire portfolio looks to go fully electric over the next decade, significant progress has been seen, but also some challenges.
However, the company remains one of the most recognized brands worldwide that continues to innovate and introduce new technologies in electric mobility. During the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), a show known for its technological innovations and newsworthy announcements, Volkswagen announced one of its biggest technological advances: ChatGPT in vehicles .
According to the Automotive Group, the latest update to its software incorporates the integration of ChatGPT into the infrastructure of the automaker’s current voice assistant, “IDA”, powered by Cerence Chat Pro.
Initially, IDA has the ability to manage cabin functions such as the infotainment system, navigation and air conditioning control, and can answer general knowledge questions. In the future, Volkswagen says that artificial intelligence (AI) will be able to address more specific questions, including providing real-time information about the vehicle. Kai Grünitz, member of the Volkswagen brand Board of Management for technical development, commented:
“Volkswagen has always democratized technology and made it available to many. This is ingrained in our DNA. As a result, we are now the first high-volume manufacturer to make this innovative technology a standard feature on vehicles from the compact segment onwards. Thanks to the seamless integration of ChatGPT and the close collaboration with our partner, Cerence, we are offering our drivers added value and direct access to the AI-based investigation tool. This also underlines the innovative strength of our new products.“.
Benefits for users
Owners of Volkswagen vehicles that receive the infotainment update that incorporates ChatGPT will be able to use their new voice assistant in the conventional way, either by using the “Hello IDA” command or by pressing the button on the steering wheel. The automotive company emphasizes that ChatGPT does not have access to any vehicle information and Cerence Chat Pro ensures that all questions and answers are deleted immediately to ensure data protection.
In a first phase, ChatGPT will be available to drivers of specific Volkswagen models, such as ID.7, ID.4, ID.5, ID.3, Tiguan, Passat and Golf. Volkswagen plans to roll out the chatbot as a standard feature on many more production models starting in the second quarter of this year. Although Mercedes-Benz also integrated ChatGPT into an EQE SUV in the past, Volkswagen intends to carry out a broader scale implementation.
