Chartwell Marine announces the launch of the TriFoiler fast ferry , a fast ferry equipped with electric foils. This trimaran demonstrator has begun sea trials, with a trial schedule extending to the end of March in the waters off Southampton.

The TriFoiler fast ferry and its successful launch

The development of the TriFoiler has been made possible thanks to the support of Innovate UK , through the UK SHORE programme, dedicated to reducing emissions in the maritime sector. With a £1.86 million grant awarded under the Clean Maritime Demonstrator Competition , this project demonstrates the potential of electric foiling technology . In addition, work has been done in collaboration with Solent University and Newcastle Marine Services , who have contributed to the research and development of the vessel’s design and construction.

The TriFoiler features a lightweight trimaran design with a fixed main foil and a powered foil rudder, allowing the ferry to reduce energy consumption without compromising speed. The trimaran’s hull, designed to reduce water resistance, ensures minimal energy consumption, allowing for greater autonomy with efficient battery charging . The batteries are strategically located in the sponsons to maximize onboard space and improve passenger safety.

TriFoiler testing will provide vital information on the ferry’s ability to operate in real-world conditions. This highly efficient electric ferry has the potential to improve busy UK coastal routes, such as the Solent , and could also have international applications, bringing electric foiling technology to new markets.
