Cepsa has been certified as a biomethane trader by the ISCC(International Sustainability & Carbon Certification) program to carry out operations with green product fuel. The company has started its activity in the market of this renewable gas, acquiring 25 GWh of biomethane produced from organic waste at the Valdemingómez plant in Madrid.
Cepsa’s certification as a biomethane trader
This operation will allow Cepsa toreplace natural gas with biomethane in its main chemical plants in Spain, reducing its CO₂ emissions. Biomethane is a second-generation biofuel that reduces CO₂ emissions by up to 90% compared to natural gas and is produced through the decomposition of biodegradable organic waste. Because it is compatible with existing gas infrastructure, it can be easily stored or injected into the into the transportation network.
The company aims to manage a portfolio of 4 TWh per year of biomethane by 2030, which will supply 650,000 households and contribute to its efforts to reduce CO₂ emissions by 55% by 2030, with the goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.
This breakthrough is part of the company’s energy transition strategy, which includes the use of biomethane in various areas such as green hydrogen production and sustainable mobility, thus supporting the circular economy and industrial decarbonization.
