The Region of Murcia has initiated a new model of household waste management that positions Cartagena as a benchmark in energy circular economy. From this week, 97 service stations in the region will start collecting used domestic oil that will be transformed into biofuel at Repsol’s industrial complex in Escombreras.
The value of domestic oil
This program, the result of a collaboration between the Department of the Environment and Repsol, offers citizens the possibility of delivering their used oil in plastic bottles at designated points. In return, those who use the Waylet app will receive will receive 30 cents per liter delivered, which they can use on fuels.which can be used for fuel, electric recharges or products from the station network.
According to Repsol’s own data, it is estimated that more than 20,000 liters per year could be recovered in the region. This initiative not only reduces water pollution caused by oil spillage into drains, but also enables the production of up to 0.9 liters of renewable fuel for every liter collected.
Escombreras complex, a pioneer in the production of 100% renewable fuels production of 100% renewable fuels on the peninsula, will use in the peninsula, will use this waste as a raw material in its energy transformation strategy. The plant will also be key to the future production of green hydrogen, in collaboration with Enagás Renovable, with a planned investment of more than 300 million euros.
Commitment to the circular economy
During the presentation, Mayor Noelia Arroyo stressed that this system makes citizens an active part of the energy transition, contributing to reducing environmental impact and generating clean energy. In turn, the Regional Minister for the Environment, Juan María Vázquez, underlined the regional commitment to recycling and decarbonization. recycling and decarbonizationwithin the Recircula 2024-2035 plan.
To guarantee traceability and proper management of the waste, Repsol has contracted an authorized manager, which ensures that all the oil collected reaches the industrial transformation process.
This model, already implemented in communities such as Galicia, Madrid and Castilla y León, makes the Region of Murcia one of the pioneers in the recycling of domestic cooking oil. recycling of domestic cooking oil on a large scale. on a large scale.
