In this exclusive interview, engineer Carlos Álvarez talks to us about education, modalities, new techniques and the diploma course he teaches through Inspenet.com, your network of knowledge and professional connection.

Alvarez is a mechanical engineer with almost three decades of experience in the oil industry, with Level III certification by the Non Destructive Testing Society in the ultrasonic method, facilitator of the diploma course ‘Non Destructive Testing: Uses and applications in the Oil and Gas sector’, endorsed by the Sartenejas Technological Park of the Simon Bolivar University.

Is E-learning through Inspenet an educational pathway to virtual transition?

Yes, obviously, although other educational platforms already exist, through Inspenet we are giving it another focus in order to further promote the training of personnel, so that engineers and technicians are trained.

Could Inspenet’s e-learning platform provide technical solutions to engineering professionals?

Inspenet offers the opportunity to look for solutions to those problems that arise in the industrial sector and not only in oil and gas, but also in the naval sector, construction, aeronautics, and this is a range of opportunities for many sectors. From a consulting point of view, it could be one of the pillars of this project.

Why should you take a diploma course?

To develop or stand out professionally, one of the main ways is through training and education. In order to achieve success in the work field by expanding and reinforcing skills and abilities.

Specifically, why study a diploma in Non Destructive Testing (NDT)?

Non Destructive Testing has acquired an importance in the reliability of processes, integrity of the different components of the industrial sector. There has always been a concern to detect failures, to determine properties, anomalies in the components that are in service in the industrial sector; in order to: avoid accidents, prevent problems in a plant shutdown, an unwanted event with damage to materials or personnel working in these areas. Non Destructive Testing has become an essential tool to detect failures and ensure the quality of the different inputs for the manufacture of equipment, piping and various components.

What is the scope of this diploma program?

The scope is quite broad, the programmatic content contemplates the handling of specifications for the qualification and certification of personnel, selection of the best method according to the scenario and circumstances, the most appropriate NDT technique and the scenario presented, orientation towards the new technological trends applied in NDT, identification and application of the associated codes and standards.

What skills will the participants of this diploma course develop?

Participants will gain knowledge, experience, learn how to select the most appropriate NDT method and technique for inspecting equipment.

Why is it important to apply this NDT method in the industrial sector?

To ensure the physical integrity of the assets, the quality of the inputs that are being used for the manufacture of the different components that may be required in the sector, in addition, it will allow detecting failures that may be developing during the service. It has its beginnings from the detection of failures in the railroads, in the boilers, to safeguard and ensure the integrity and reliability in the operation of the equipment. Today, this discipline is an integral part of reliability engineering.

Finally, what would be your contribution as an engineer to the development of this diploma program?

As a professional, I consider that this diploma course is a great contribution for professionals who are developing in the area of equipment inspection and reliability. The commitment and professionalism to transmit the knowledge, so that the inspection personnel know and select the most appropriate NDT methods to be applied in certain conditions in the oil and gas sector.
