Aboard a Space X Falcon 9, the Transporter-6 mission launched successfully at 6:55 a.m. PT on January 3, which carried 114 small satellites into orbit, among which was the Momentus-Vigoride satellite spacecraft, inside which is the prototype of the Space Solar Energy Project.

The prototype called the Space Solar Power Demonstrator (SSPD) will be deployed to test several key components of an ambitious plan to harvest solar energy in space and send it back to Earth, a project spearheaded by the Institute. California Tech (Caltech).

The SSPD (50 kilograms) will test a reduced deployable structure of almost two square meters that simulates the mechanisms necessary to build a huge power generation station in space. Engineers will also evaluate the performance of 32 types of solar cells to determine which design is the most effective, and will test the microwave power transmitters needed to send power back to Earth.

“Space solar power provides a way to harness the virtually unlimited supply of solar power in outer space, where power is constantly available without being subject to day/night cycles, seasons, and cloud cover,” he says. Caltech in a statement.

The mission “represents an important milestone in the project and promises to make what was once science fiction a reality,” he adds. “When fully completed, SSPP will deploy a constellation of modular spacecraft that will collect sunlight, transform it into electricity, and then transmit it wirelessly over long distances wherever it is needed, even to places that currently have no access. to reliable power.
