Gas distribution network operator Cadent has announced plans to build a new subway hydrogen pipeline connecting the Humber with Nottinghamshire through Lincolnshire. The proposal is part of the H₂East Pipeline initiative, a strategic component of the East Coast Hydrogen program.

Construction plans for the subway hydrogen pipeline

The pipeline is designed to supply low-carbon hydrogen to energy-intensive industries to energy-intensive industries such as steel, chemical production and the food industry. These industries, located along the East of England’s industrial corridor, will be able to gradually replace natural gas with hydrogen, accelerating the transition to more sustainable processes.

H₂East is a collaboration between Cadent, National Gas and. Northern Gas Networkswhose aim is to facilitate the transport of hydrogen produced and stored in the region to industrial users. This network represents a key step in strengthening the hydrogen economy in the UK.

According to Claire Ward, mayor of the East Midlands, the project fits in with the region’s plans for green economic growth by encouraging innovation and attracting investment.

The subway pipeline, most of whose infrastructure will be invisible once completed, will play a key role in decarbonizing sectors that are difficult to electrify. In addition to reducing emissions, it will enable the retention of jobs in industrial areas, boost the development of new technical capabilities and pave the way for future expansions of the hydrogen network.

Cadent has announced that it will conduct a public consultation later this year to receive feedback from communities along the route. This process will be essential to refine the pipeline route and consolidate the project’s commitment to sustainable development.

Adam Knight, H₂East Pipeline project director, stressed that this investment seeks to align economic growth with the UK’s net zero emissions targets, and highlighted the close collaboration with local and industrial stakeholders to achieve this.
