Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore has announced the signing of a contract with Gelibolu Shipyard and Germany’s eCap Marine for the classification of four general cargo vessels, under a 2+2 scheme, to be built for Norway’s Møre Sjø AS. The vessels will be hydrogen-powered, representing the first of their class to be recognized by Bureau Veritas under the new HYDROGENFUEL scheme.
Classification of hydrogen cargo vessels
Designed to operate under the Norwegian flag, the vessels will be 88.7 meters long and 14.2 meters wide, with a draft of six meters and the capacity to carry dry bulk cargo. By integrating an electric propulsion system based on compressed hydrogen, battery backup and advanced unrestricted navigation standards.
The company eCap Marine lead the design of the hydrogen hydrogen systemincluding installation, commissioning and alternative design approval. This process is performed under the direct supervision of Bureau Veritas, which will ensure the safe and reliable integration of the on-board technologies.
In addition to their technological propulsion system, the vessels will have additional notations that strengthen their technical and operational profile: Cyber Resilient, Unrestricted Navigation, AUT-UMS, underwater inspection and connection to OPS systems from port.
This contract specifies that the first units will be built with the HYDROGENFUEL-PREPARED notation, ensuring their structural and technical readiness to integrate hydrogen energy systems. Once the validation and sea trials are completed, they will be able to obtain the full HYDROGENFUEL designation, complying with the environmental requirements of European shipping.
