Skansi Offshore has launched a firefighting brine-based fire extinguishing system based fire suppression system, now operational on board the ferry Norrøna. This system is designed to address one of the most complex challenges in today’s maritime industry: fires originating from electric vehicles.

The launch of the fire extinguishing system

This system, developed in collaboration with KNUD E. HANSEN, is distinguished by its ability to fight fires in a more efficient and environmentally friendly manner. The brine system acts directly on the battery of electric vehicles. This is achieved by injecting cold brine directly into the vehicle cabin, cooling the battery cells and limiting the spread of fire.

This approach manages to extinguish the fire while deactivating the battery cells, minimizing the risk of fire reactivation. Tests in the Faroe Islands demonstrated its effectiveness in extinguishing a fire in an electric vehicle in less than an hour, an improvement over current systems, which can take up to 24 hours to control such fires.

With this technology, a simple, low-maintenance and environmentally friendly solution is presented, making it an ideal choice for RoPAX and RoRo vessels. In addition, its design allows it to be integrated into existing vessel systems with minimal modifications.
