BP has provided an update on its major Boomerangue discovery, located in the Santos pre-salt basin, offshore Brazil. This discovery, announced in August 2025, has shown promising results, which could cement it as one of BP’s largest finds in the last 25 years.
Boomerangue discovery and hydrocarbon potential
Initial laboratory and pressure gradient analyses have confirmed the presence of a gross hydrocarbon column approximately 1000 meters high, with 100 meters of oil and 900 meters of liquids-rich gas condensate. This discovery is remarkable not only for the size of the column, but also for the high quality of the rock in which it is found, providing a strong rationale for the viability of the field development.
BP believes that the presence of fluids throughout the hydrocarbon column, coupled with the high-quality rock properties observed, ensures excellent production potential. In addition, the company is confident that carbon dioxide in the reservoir can be managed efficiently, enhancing the long-term sustainability of the project.
In its press release, BP mentioned that it is continuing with laboratory analysis and other detailed studies to determine fluid characteristics, as well as gas/oil and condensate/gas ratios. These studies will allow a more accurate estimation of in situ reservoir volumes and provide a timely update on the progress of the project.
Gordon Birrell, BP’s Executive Vice President of Production and Operations, commented, “In 2025 we have made significant strategic achievements in Exploration and Production, with record reliability of our plants, the start-up of six major projects and the approval of five others. This discovery at Boomerangue is part of that progress, and although we are still in the exploration phase, the early results are extremely encouraging, giving us great confidence in the potential of this field.”
The Boomerangue project is also part of 12 discoveries made by BP in 2025 in different basins, including the Gulf of America and Namibia, through its Azule Energy joint venture with Eni. This success highlights BP’s ability to identify and develop strategic resources in diverse regions.
The 1-BP-13-SPS exploration well, drilled in the Bumerangue block, is located at a total depth of 5855 meters, 404 kilometers offshore Brazil. The well penetrated high-quality carbonate pre-salt rock with an area of more than 300 square kilometers. BP holds a 100% interest in the block, with Pré-Sal Petróleo SA acting as manager of the Production Sharing Contract.
BP was awarded this block in December 2022 during the 1st Cycle of the National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels (ANP) Open Production Sharing Area. This discovery further strengthens BP’s commitment to Brazil, a country in which it has operated for more than 50 years. The company currently has interests in six offshore blocks, two of which are operated directly by BP.
