Boston Dynamics and the Robotics & AI Institute have announced a strategic partnership to improve the capabilities of humanoid robots through reinforcement learning. The collaboration focuses on optimizing the mobility and manipulation of the Atlas robot , one of the most advanced platforms in its class.
An innovative approach to advanced robotics
Reinforcement learning has proven to be a key technique in the evolution of artificial intelligence applied to robotics. Thanks to this method, Atlas will be able to develop more precise and efficient skills in dynamic environments. This advance will allow robots to perform complex tasks with greater autonomy and adaptability.
But for humanoids to be useful, they must be flexible enough to work in many different types of environments and perform tasks in a wide variety of applications. Our collaboration with the RAI Institute brings together two of the world’s leading robotics organizations to help accelerate the basic capabilities needed for robots like Atlas to become a valuable tool in people’s lives.
Said Robert Playter, CEO of Boston Dynamics, highlighting the importance of this partnership.
New capabilities of the Atlas robot
The project will allow Atlas to develop impressive capabilities such as:
- Improved dynamic locomotion : Atlas will be able to run and move with greater stability on uneven terrain, adapting in real time to different surfaces. Its reinforcement learning will allow for more natural and fluid movements.
- Full Body Manipulation : You will implement full body contact strategies, allowing you to lift and move heavy objects with precision, using advanced arm, leg and torso coordination.
- Advanced interaction with your environment : You will be able to open doors, activate switches and manipulate tools with great precision, adapting your strength and movements to different materials and structures without damaging them.
Project applications and objectives
The project has several key objectives:
- Optimized Mobility : Create realistic simulations to improve locomotion and bridge the gap between simulation and the real world.
- Interaction with the environment : Develop advanced manipulation strategies that allow Atlas to operate with objects, doors and surfaces.
- Body coordination : Implement algorithms that improve synchronization between limbs to manipulate heavy objects with greater precision.
Marc Raibert, director of the RAI Institute, explained that this research, in addition to strengthening Atlas, will also generate advances applicable to other robotic platforms .
