The presidents of Bolivia, Luis Arce, and of Argentina, Alberto Fernández, inaugurated the “Juana Azurduy de Padilla” international interconnection line, a fundamental route for the export of Bolivian electricity to northern Argentina.

“It is a historic day for binational and regional electrical integration, Bolivia begins the export of electrical energy to Argentina,” Arce said on his Twitter account with a video of the inauguration ceremony.

After their participation in the Summit of the Union of South American Nations (Unasur) in Brazil, the presidents of Bolivia and Argentina met again in the Bolivian municipality of Yacuiba, department of Tarija (south), to inaugurate this line with capacity transmission of 132 kilowatts.

The Bolivian president stressed that this work represents “the brotherhood between two countries that have a common history” and renews the friendship and affection between two “brotherly peoples.”

The project, which required an investment of USD 52.8 million, includes 120 kilometers of power lines from the Yaguacua Substation in Bolivia and through rural terrain to the Tartagal substation in the Argentine province of Salta.

Arce emphasized that with the electrical interconnection between both nations an old desire is fulfilled and energy integration in the Southern Cone is strengthened, because Bolivia will join the system that allows electrical exchange with Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay and Brazil.

For his part, Fernández highlighted the historic undertaking, which he described as yet another example of the good relations between the two countries.

“(With Arce) we share the views of establishing equality and justice in our peoples, of preserving and respecting the rule of law, of proclaiming the unity of the popular forces and of building a Latin America that integrates, a South America that integrates” , he asserted.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Hydrocarbons and Energies of Bolivia, Franklin Molina, said that with this start-up the export of surplus Bolivian electrical energy to Argentine territory is consolidated, without affecting the reliability or quality of electrical supply in the domestic market.
