Ence, through its subsidiary Ence Biogas, is carrying out a strategic plan in Barbastro, Huesca, which involves the construction of a biomethane and biofertilizer plant. This project aims to take advantage of organic waste from agriculture, livestock and the agri-food industry, transforming it into biomethane, a renewable gas that will be injected into the gas pipeline network.
In addition, it will produce pelletized organic fertilizers for use in local agriculture. This approach combines clean energy generation with the circular economy, by reusing waste and contributing to the energy and agricultural sustainability of the region.
The biomethane plant will supply 10,000 homes
During the recent Regional Fair of Barbastro (FERMA), the company announced that the plant will have the capacity to produce between 90 and 95 GWh of biomethane per year , an amount equivalent to the energy consumption of around 10,000 homes. This biomethane will be injected directly into the local gas pipeline, contributing to the decarbonisation of the energy supply.
In addition to energy, the plant will generate around 20,000 tonnes of pelletised organic fertiliser per year , intended to improve the fertility of agricultural soils in the region. These organic fertilisers will be certified according to European regulations and will be suitable for use on a wide variety of crops, from cereals to fruit trees and vineyards.
The project has been recognised by the Government of Aragon as an Investment of Regional Interest, reflecting its importance at both local and regional level. With an investment of over 20 million euros, the plant will process up to 140,000 tonnes of biomass per year , which will also create 75 jobs during construction and 25 direct jobs in its operational phase. The creation of up to 75 indirect jobs associated with industrial activity is also expected.
The materials used for the production of biomethane and biofertilizers include pig slurry, cattle manure and agricultural waste. This will prevent the accumulation of waste and will be used to generate energy and value-added agricultural products.
