BASF ‘ s wholly owned subsidiary BASF Stationary Energy Storage GmbH and Japanese manufacturer NGK Insulators (NGK) have introduced a new NAS battery under advanced container-type technology (sodium-sulfur battery).
The NAS MODEL L24 battery design
This new battery has been jointly developed by NGK and BASF, which has an extremely low degradation rate of less than 01% per year. This is due to thereduction of corrosion in the battery cells.
“The development of this advanced NAS battery is a milestone achieved by the joint team of BASF and NGK, combining the specialties of both companies. With the NAS MODEL L24, our customers will be able to lower their initial investment in battery storage systems and save around 20% in costs over the course of the project. We are proud to contribute to the advancement of NAS battery technology, which is vital for a successful energy transition.
Frank Prechtl, Managing Director of BASF Stationary Energy Storage GmbH, a subsidiary of BASF.
In addition, the battery includes an improved thermal management system in the modules, allowing extended discharges on a continuous basis. These technological developments have been validated through field tests.
Moreover, improvements in the design of this battery allow projects to be executed with considerably fewer NAS containers, reducing maintenance costs over the life of the project.
Sodium-sulfur battery from BASF and NGK
This new design complies with the latest safety standards for energy storage facilities, such as UL1973 and UL9540A, highlighting the high safety of NAS facilities and other storage systems.
For example, NAS batteries are high-energy, long-life, stationary storage devices with extended service life and enhanced safety, capable of providing a stable power supply for six hours or more.
“The improved performance is the result of an intensive and effective collaboration between BASF and NGK initiated in 2019. The degradation rate registers a lower 01% annualized, an important result in the energy storage industry. Through BASF’s global sales network, we are excited to offer solutions to more customers with the NAS MODEL L24, promoting the global adoption of renewable energy and reducing CO₂ emissions.”
Ryugo Takeda, NGK’s general manager of energy storage.
In the last 20 years, they have been implemented in more than 250 locations around the world, with a total production of close to 5 gigawatt-hours. They are used to stabilize renewable energyThey are used to stabilize renewable energy, optimize its use, reduce peaks and balance loads, as well as for emergency power supply. And according to BASF, the NAS MODEL L24 batteries will start to be delivered in the second half of 2024.
