British firm BAR Technologies has been recognized with the GREEN4SEA EUROPORT award for the introduction of its wind-assisted propulsion system, WindWings. This award demonstrates its active involvement in wind energy for a sustainable evolution of shipping.
The prestigious GREEN4SEA EUROPORT Award
The technology was developed by BAR Technologies‘ marine engineering team, where they present WindWings as a three-element rigid sail system that is in operation on commercial vessels and for other industrial purposes.
Moreover, the development does not require active suction mechanisms or auxiliary motors to operate. In addition, its design automatically adjusts the curvature and angle of attack of the sails according to wind conditions, maximizing efficiency without the need for continuous intervention.
Since its spin-off from the British America’s Cup team, BAR Technologies has focused its efforts on designing technology solutions for commercial shipping. The company integrates naval architecture, fluid dynamics and systems engineering to meet the current challenges of decarbonization in the maritime sector.
The WindWings development is presented as a scalable solution that can be easily integrated into new or existing vessels. At 37.5 meters high, each unit offers superior aerodynamic performance through its three-element wing design, which provides up to 2.5 times more lift than a conventional sail on the market.
