The joint venture between Orlen Group and Northland Power has successfully completed the installation of the first Vestas V236-15 MW turbine at the Baltic Power offshore wind farm, located off the coast of the Baltic Sea in Poland.
With a planned total capacity of 1.2 gigawatts, Baltic Power will be the country’s first operational offshore wind farm. The installed wind turbine marks the start of a key phase in the construction of this mega-project, whose energy will be able to supply more than 1.5 million Polish households. It is expected to be operational in 2026.
A large-scale offshore wind turbine
The model V236 installed stands out for its total height of more than 260 meters and 115-meter-long blades. Some of the key parts such as the nacelles and tower sections have been manufactured at Vestas’ Szczecin plant, favoring domestic production. The towers incorporate recycled steel, a first for this type ofa first for this type of project in Europe.
The installation installation is being carried out by Cadeler by means of the Wind Osprey self-elevating vessel. This vessel was upgraded to lift components weighing up to 1,600 tons and can simultaneously transport three complete turbines. Around 15 vessels are assisting in the offshore activities, which also include foundations, substations and cable laying.
Land preparations and future operations
While the offshore campaign progresses, onshore construction continues on the Łeba substation, which will operate as a maintenance base for the next three decades. The project also envisages the connection to electricity grids by means of submarine and terrestrial cables cables, which are in the process of being installed.
It is estimated that Baltic Power will generate around 4 TWh per year, covering around 3% of the national electricity demand. In addition to significantly reducing CO₂ emissions, the project lays the groundwork for future offshore wind developments in the region and positions Poland as a major player in the European renewable sector.
