Canadian firm Ballard Power Systems has closed a deal with German company eCap Marine to supply 32 FCwave engines, equivalent to 6.4 MW of power, for two vessels operated by Samskip. These units, powered by PEM fuel cells will contribute to the decarbonization of the routes between Norway and the Netherlands.

Hydrogen engines for zero-emission navigation

Each of the 32 motors delivered by Ballard has a power rating of 200 kW and will be integrated into propulsion systems developed by eCap Marine, which specializes in clean marine technologies. The aim is to replace conventional diesel solutions with DNV-certified fuel cells for marine use, consolidating a viable energy alternative in the European maritime sector.

This initiative strengthens the relationship between Ballard and eCap Marine, whose cooperation began in 2021. The project is also supported by ENOVA, the Norwegian agency in charge of promoting innovative climate solutions, which reinforces the public-private commitment to sustainable shipping.

Samskip vessels that will receive these systems will operate on key North Sea trade routes. Thanks to this hydrogen technology technology based on the FCwave™ engines.engines, a significant reduction in pollutant emissions on long-haul voyages is expected.
