UK firm AV Dawson Transport, based in Middlesbrough, has completed a pilot test of an electric freight truck as part of its strategy to achieve net-zero emissions. The initiative was carried out in collaboration with VEV, a provider of fleet electrification solutions, through its managed testing service.

During the 10-day test period, the electric truck traveled more than 2,900 kilometers distributed over 42 trips, avoiding the emission of 2.3 tons of CO₂. These results reaffirm the potential of this type of technology to transform the industrial cargo transport, one of the sectors with the highestone of the sectors with the highest emissions.

Direct impact on industrial customers

AV Dawson Transport stressed that the transition to alternative energy vehicles will reduce its own emissions and enable its customers to reduce Scope 3 emissions, those generated throughout their supply chain. Companies such as British Steel, one of the customers involved in the trial, benefited directly from the use of the electric truck during the transport of steel sections.

Chief Operating Officer Paul Scott noted that they have evaluated alternative fuels over the past year, including CNG, but that the performance of this test represents a key breakthrough. He added that to meet their ESG targets, they must adapt quickly without losing logistical efficiency.

Transition as a long-term strategy

80% of AV Dawson Group’s direct emissions come from road transport, making the decarbonization of its fleet a key factor in meeting its environmental commitments. Jon Booth, the group’s sustainability director, said that electrification is a key tool for accompanying its customers on the road to climate neutrality.

VEV, for its part, provided the truck, the loading infrastructure and advice during the piloting. Its proposal seeks to offer a comprehensive solution for the adoption of electric fleets. electric fleets in high-demand sectors such as logistics and industry.

Charlie Mortimer-Bell, head of proposals at VEVexplained that the economic competitiveness of electric trucks is catching up with their diesel counterparts, positioning them as a viable option both environmentally and financially.

Logistics innovation with electric trucks

AV Dawson Transport reaffirms its commitment to sustainable logistics through informed decisions and strategic partnerships. The success of this trial represents the first step in a strategy of progressive adoption of electric freight vehicles that could reduce its emissions by more than 90%. The company is now evaluating which units are best suited to its routes and customers, projecting a staggered renewal of its fleet.

With more than 175 trailers and a presence in rail terminals, ports and manufacturers throughout the United Kingdom, the company seeks to consolidate its position as a benchmark in low-emission logistics solutions.
