Urgent increase in onshore wind power tenders
The BadenWürttemberg Renewable Energy Platform (PEE BW) and the Bavarian Renewable Energy Association (LEE Bayern) have launched a joint appeal to the German Federal Government and the Federal Network Agency to significantly increase the tender volume for onshore wind power by 2026.
Energy sector associations are urging an increase in wind power tenders in 2026, noting that ready-to-go projects can quickly reduce dependence on coal and accelerate the energy transition.
Ready projects stall expansion due to high demand
In addition to PEE BW and LEE Bayern, the Bavarian government, the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of the Environment and other federal states support the call for wind power tenders. They argue that increasing tenders within the existing legal framework is a pragmatic measure to unblock already approved projects and alleviate the various bottlenecks in the procurement process.
From a technical and supply chain perspective, increasing wind power tenders in 2026 has multiplier effects: it allows staggering the demand for components (blades, towers, generators), optimizes port logistics and reduces delivery times; it also improves the planning of grid evacuation reinforcements.
Internationally, strong auction activity is expected, especially in Europe, highlighting the importance of aligning the entire network infrastructure with the new generation.
Increased bidding would allow coal displacement and CO2 reduction
In the short to medium term, this planned increase could reduce the LCOE (levelized cost of electricity) through economies of scale and industrial learning curve, reduce congestion cost overruns and contractual risk, and accelerate the displacement of coal generation in the German electricity mix.
According to the associations, hundreds of wind farm projects across Germany are fully planned and approved, but are unable to move forward because the current auctions are oversubscribed and insufficient in volume.
